The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 is a landmark legislation enacted by the Government of India to promote transparency and accountability in public administration. It empowers Indian citizens to request information from public authorities, ensuring that government operations are conducted openly. Under this act, any individual can seek details about government records, policies, and decisions, provided such disclosure does not compromise national security, personal privacy, or public safety.
Public authorities are obligated to respond to RTI queries within 30 days, with provisions for penalties in cases of undue delay or denial. The RTI Act has strengthened democracy by enabling citizens to participate in governance and combat corruption effectively.
